The new helicopters, to be based at Bardufoss Air Station in northern Norway, are to be used by the Norwegian Coast Guard for antisubmarine warfare (ASW) operations, but Oslo still has to decide on a separate acquisition to replace NH90 ASW capable platforms.
The Foreign Military Sales contract is likely to be worth around $985 million USD.
The announcement comes as Spain works to upgrade other parts of its helicopter fleet.
“We are committed to delivering offset programs that are in line with India’s Defence Acquisition Procedure and meet the Indian government’s stated goals, including strengthening India’s aerospace capabilities,” a Boeing statement says.
“This really was one of the higher priorities the [Indian] navy had, to get these aircraft delivered," Tom Kane, director of Sikorsky’s Naval Helicopter Programs, says. "I requested that the aircraft be made available on an accelerated basis.”
